The Initial 3D Scanning
The first step in the implant process involves the initial 3D scan. This scan is much like other dental scans and all it requires you to do is sit still in the dental chair while the scan is taken. However, the big difference between a 2D and a 3D scan is the amount of radiation that you are exposed to. When you get 3D scanning, you are exposed to 70% less radiation than with a regular x-ray. Another difference between a 2D and 3D scan is the quality of the image that is produced. The depth and the detail in the 3D scan makes it possible for Dr. Pitman and Dr. Ntounis to see all of your teeth, gums, bones, nerves, etc. This gives them a full view of all the structures in your mouth, thus allowing them to create the best dental implant possible. Creating The Dental Implant
Once the 3D scanning is done, the dental implant can then be created. Thanks to the high quality of the scan, the dental implant can be made very accurately. First, the dental screw is put into place. For this part of the procedure, you will likely be sedated. Once completed, the necessary time is taken for the screw to graft to the bone. This is known as osseointegration and is crucial to a successful implant.
Having the 3D image to refer to during this process allows your periodontist to make sure he is clear of any nerves and is going into a strong area of jaw bone that can handle the graft. This is the longest part of the process and will take a few months to complete.
Once osseointegration has taken place, the abutment is placed on the screw. This is the piece that the connects the screw to the crown. This abutment is placed in line with your gums, thus ensuring the crown is at the same level as the rest of your teeth.
The final step involves attaching the custom made crown onto the abutment. This crown is made to look and function as a natural tooth and will blend in well with your other teeth. Again, because the 3D scan is so detailed and accurate, making the tooth to look and function perfectly is much easier and much more likely. Another added bonus is the fact that the 3D scan often eliminates the need for a mold to be taken of your mouth after the screw and abutment are in place. The 3D scan creates this for you and helps to speed up the process of creating the crown.
