From Athens to Fredericksburg: A Physician’s Journey
I was born and raised in Athens, Greece, in a boisterous family of four. From an early age, I was drawn to science, precision and the human connection that medicine demands. Following a highly competitive national exam process, I earned a place at the School of Dentistry at the University of Athens. This was the beginning of a decade-long educational journey that would take me from the Mediterranean to the American South.
After completing my Doctor of Dental Sciences degree alongside a Master of Science and a Master of Clinical Dentistry, I was elected Vice President of the European Dental Students Association. This experience that gave me an early appreciation for international collaboration and the breadth of our profession.
Dual Specialty Training After Dental School
Passionate about mastering both the restorative and surgical dimensions of complex dental care, I pursued what is genuinely rare in our field: dual specialty training. I completed a three-year prosthodontics residency at the University of Athens, learning to design individualized treatment plans for patients with the most complex dental needs—including full-mouth restorations and implant prosthetics for cancer patients. During this time, I successfully defended my first master’s thesis on biomaterials.
Inspired by my own dual-trained mentors, I applied for and was accepted to the prestigious three-year Periodontics and Implant Surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Hospital. There, I received comprehensive surgical training, from advanced bone grafting and sinus lifts to full arch dental implant placement and moderate sedation. I also defended my second master’s thesis, on growth factors and bone grafting for dental implants.
This six-year post-doctoral specialty training places me among a very small group of clinicians in the United States who hold board certification in periodontology with dual specialty expertise in prosthodontics. It means that I can manage every phase of your care, from surgical site preparation to the final restorative result. with complete clinical continuity.
Academic Distinction
Following my residency, I joined the faculty of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry as Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Health. It was there that I was honored to receive two of the most meaningful recognitions of my career: the Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, and the Favorite Faculty Award, voted by the dental students themselves.
My scholarly work has generated over 1570 citations in the academic literature, with peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals including Clinical Advances in Periodontics, where I continue to serve on the Editorial Board. I am a co-author in the textbook of Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Therapy by Elsevier publishing, edited by Drs. Mandelaris & Vance — a definitive clinical reference in our field.
International Lecturing & Continuing Education
I am privileged to be invited regularly to speak at major national and international conferences and universities such as the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Iowa and New York University as well as the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Dentistry.
Closer to home, I direct the Commonwealth Study Club, which is part of the renowned Seattle Study Club network and a local Spear Study Club, both of which bring dentists and hygienists together for advanced continuing education and collaborative case discussion. I also routinely complete three times the state-required continuing education hours each year, because I believe that staying at the frontier of our specialty is not optional but an obligation to every patient I treat.
Becoming Rooted in Fredericksburg
I have practiced exclusively in Fredericksburg since 2014. and I live here, too! That is not incidental. I believe a physician should be invested in the community they serve, not just commuting through it. We are sustaining sponsors of the University of Mary Washington Great Lives lecture series, sponsors of the Community Foundation for consecutive years, and active supporters of other local organizations.
I came to Fredericksburg because of love. I met my late wife and practice partner, Dr. Lillie Pitman, during our residency in Birmingham, and her memory continues to inspire everything we do at Synergy Periodontics & Implants. I stay because this community has welcomed me as one of its own.
Outside the Office
When not at Synergy, I am most often with my two children. I coach soccer and basketball teams and hold a deep personal interest in history, art, aviation and landscape photography. These passions reflect the same attention to detail, patience and appreciation for beauty that define my clinical work.
