What is accelerated orthodontics?
Surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy is an advanced procedure used when there is insufficient jaw bone to expand the arches and align the teeth. This advanced procedure has been shown to decrease time in orthodontic treatment by up to 6 months and prevent future gum recession. Over time, our jaws have grown smaller and smaller. As a result, a lot of us end up with too small jaws—and our teeth don’t fit. In the future, we expect that there is going to be more need for orthodontics to make up for the limited space. Additionally, since the space is so limited, our teeth can only move but so much, and many times, at the end of the movement, we see a lot of gum recession.
Surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy is an advanced procedure used when there is insufficient alveolar bone to expand the arches. In some cases, the bone is too thin to move teeth with orthodontics and the arches need to be expanded. The doctors at Synergy Periodontics and Implants can perform a periodontal pre-orthodontic augmentation, also known as POPA, to increase the bone and soft tissue space. This advanced procedure has been shown to decrease time in orthodontic treatment by up to 6 months. There is new evidence that shows increasing the arch space helps with sleep apnea and other breathing deficiencies.
Periodontal Pre-Orthodontic Augmentation
One of the procedures that we provide here at Synergy Periodontics and Implants is POPA. In cases where the bone in front of the teeth is too thin and the orthodontist needs to expand the arch, then we can add bone and soft tissue, essentially increasing the space in which teeth can move! Also, by adding bone and gum tissue, we can prevent recession and other periodontal issues!
The cherry on top is that this procedure can be combined with Invisalign® and makes the speed of teeth movement during accelerated orthodontics treatments much faster. In certain cases it can reduce the necessary treatment time by 6 months. We streamline your care by communicating and working closely with your orthodontist throughout your entire experience.
Additionally, since we are able to open the arch more with the addition of tissue, there is emerging evidence that it may help with the amount of air we can inhale. In certain cases, this may help with sleep apnea or breathing deficiencies.
