Lillie Pitman, DMD Tribute ✝
Dr. Lillie Mae Pitman went to meet the most merciful Father on November 21, 2023 in Fredericksburg, VA after a brave battle with cancer.
Dr. Pitman was born in Northern California, November 28, 1985. She studied at University of Nebraska–Lincoln and acquired her dental degree from Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. She completed a Periodontics and dental implants residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She was awarded the prestigious Gerald M. Kramer award for excellence in character and academic achievement.
She lived in Fredericksburg after establishing her practice, Synergy Periodontics and Implants, in 2014 with her husband. She was an active
member of the Rappahannock Rotary club and the Fredericksburg Full Gospel Fellowship church and served as president of the Virginia Society of Periodontists. Dr. Pitman devoted her life to her family and our Lord Jesus Christ. She was cherished by our community, her patients, and our colleagues for her acts of service and her warm and caring character.
She is superseded by her father, John Bryan Pitman, and is survived by her husband, Dr. Thanos Dounis, and their two beautiful children; mother Lori Bolton; and two sisters, Lacy Brown and Jana Schifflet; and brother John Pitman, Jr.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how happy I am with both Dr’s Pitman and Thanos Dounis. My experiences with both have been great. They’re competent, compassionate, honest, solid communicators (speaking & listening) and not afraid to spend a few minutes talking with me; both before and after the exam or procedure. And they’re always smiling when I see them and that makes a lasting impression on me.
My husband told me he had an excellent experience for his first visit at Synergy. One day I had problems with my tooth and my dentist recommended Synergy. They know my husband, so I went there with him and he was right – it was an excellent visit for me. They are friendly… then I met Dr. Pitman, she’s very nice, she explained everything about my problems. Recommended 100% Dr. Pitman and her husband!
Very friendly and competent staff, and Dr. Pitman and Dr. Thanos Dounis are skilled and accomplished periodontists. I also learned new and better preventive care skills.
Very pleased with the care and professionalism of Dr. Thanos Dounis and the staff at Synergy Periodontics. Dr. Pitman is terrific, too, as I saw her for the initial consultation. This practice also excels at patient communications. We are fortunate to have them in the Fredericksburg area.
When was the last time a doctor called YOU, the same evening as your procedure, to ask how you are doing? I have had extractions by BOTH Dr. Pitman AND Dr. Thanos Dounis and an implant by Dr. Pitman. They each took time to see how I felt and to provide their personal cell phone number. That’s the genuine concern Synergy offers for each person.
Excellent practice. Cannot say enough about the expertise, professionalism, and caring exhibited by Dr. Pitman and the follow up by Dr. Thanos Dounis. The staff went out of their way to be informative, helpful and friendly. This was my first implant and it was handled beautifully and in a calming manner.

Wonderful staff! Always met with a pleasant greeting. My hygienist Angie is personable and always makes sure I’m comfortable and well taken care of. Drs. Pitman and Thanos Dounis are the best!
The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and make you feel at ease. It’s always a pleasant experience being seen here. I’ve seen Dr. Pitman and Dr. Thanos Dounis and would highly recommend both of them. They explained the treatment plan and listened to and addressed my questions and concerns and made sure I was comfortable moving forward.

They are both extremely friendly and professional, and take the time to explain everything and answer all questions.
