It all started with an ambitious reporter Jeff Donn and an Associated Press BIG STORY!
It is true that the evidence as evaluated scientifically from systematic reviews and meta-analyses may demonstrate weak evidence on the efficacy of flossing. The truth of the matter is that flossing efficacy has never been studied properly. According to a statement released by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP): “Because the development of periodontal disease is slow in nature and because a variety of factors can impact its progression, studies that examine the efficacy of daily flossing are best conducted over a number of years and among a large population.”
The fact that existing evidence appears weak according to our strictest scientific criteria can be misinterpreted by the public as there is no need to floss !! Such a gross conclusion is not only wrong but also harmful for our patients…
In fact, it’s not even about flossing… it is more about cleaning between our teeth. Most of our long-standing patients with periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory condition), have had treatment that has resulted in more open areas between their teeth. In fact for these patients, floss is not the most appropriate way to clean between the teeth. In these cases we recommend interproximal brushes and other means to effectively remove plaque.
I wonder if there are published evidence that are deemed strong according to our strictest criteria that the parachute works?? Guess what… NO!
Does that mean that I am not going to use one if I had to jump off a plane??
We recommend flossing or, even more importantly, cleaning between your teeth daily to avoid gum disease and cavities! Next time you are in, check with Drs. Pitman and Ntounis! Visit Synergy Periodontics and Implants today!
